Birds on the range

We raise a colorful variety of interesting poultry, favoring birds that can tolerate the Ozarks. We can have long stretches of below-freezing weather in the winter, wet springs, and hot, humid summers. To keep our birds safe from local predators (foxes, coyotes, skunks, owls, hawks), we pasture our them in ‘tractors’ (mobile pens) or in oversized, open-air pens with netting. They always have fresh water and nutritionally balanced feed as well as continuous access to grass and (yum!) bugs.

Swedish Flower Hens

Designated as a landrace in Sweden, these birds have characteristic ‘flowers’ at the tips of their feathers, they can have ‘crests’ of feathers on their heads (or not!), and they display a dizzying array of pattern bases on the familiar blue/black/splash colors.

We maintain five distinct breeding groups with birds of all base colors (blue/black/splash) and patterns (we also have ‘snoleopard’ genetics represented). We rotate roosters each breeding season, using the spiral, or clan, breeding system. This ensures genetic diversity, as is intended with this breed.

Spring 2023: Sold out.

Silver Dorkings

Dorkings are a versatile breed known for prolific egg laying and delicious meat. One of the oldest known chicken breeds, they may have been around as early as 43 AD. Some historians say they were brought to Great Britain from Rome by Juliuis Cesar! Both rare and unique, Dorkings have a long body, a thick chest, and five toes.

We raise Silver Gray Dorkings. The males have silver and white feathers over a base of black. The females are charcoal gray and silvery white, and they lay medium-sized white eggs.

Spring 2023: Sold out.

Chocolate Turkeys

Heritage turkeys are delicious, and this year we’re raising chocolates. They are larger than most Heritage turkeys, but do not have the health issues associated with commercial breeds. Healthy, active, and hardy, these birds are well-adapted to the Ozarks climate.

Spring 2023: Adult turkeys are $50 each.

Silveruud Hybrids

Commonly known as Isbars here in the US, the Silverudd’s Blue was created by a Swedish monk and geneticist, Martin Silverudd. Crossing several breeds, he endeavored to create an autosexing green egg-laying machine. He did not entirely succeed—they are not autosexing—but they are prolific layers of eggs in varying shades of green from olive to moss to pastel…even speckles!

We are currently crossing Silverudd’s Blues with another breed with barring in an effort to bring autosexing into the mix. We’re not there yet, as this is a multi-generational project—but we do have a lot of healthy hybrid hens and pullets ready for new homes. Our F1 crosses are laying medium/large white or light green eggs, and have done so nearly daily throughout the year.

Spring 2023: Sold out.
